Unsupported devices & future versions   09/03/16

Unsupported devices posts outside the Device requests forum will be deleted without comment. Posts asking about/for future versions of CM will be locked and/or deleted.   We don't have a crystal ball; we don't know if someone will make CM $version for your deivce or if CM $version+1 will be made for your supported device.

Huawei Ideos X5 (U8800)

48 posts in this topic

Was wondering if someone with a bit more know-how-can-do about CM could tell me if flashing HTC desire Z CM would work.

The phone are pretty much EXACTLY the same, bar 0.1" difference in screen size and the QWERTY keayboard.

Comparison.

Huawei have made the Kernel source available for download already! :)

Knowledgeable CM members, does this make it easier to make a CM version of Froyo for it? And Gingerbread? Does it help with other phone models like the Desire Z? How common is it for manufacturers to release the Kernel sources and if this move by Huawei is unusual, do we have the makings of a cult geeks phone in the Ideos X5 U8800?

Before asking these questions I hunted through the huaweidevice dot com site for any documents or policy statement about the release but could find none. I've downloaded it and extracted the tarball and there are many text files within but obviously not had time to read them yet. :)

There is a "drivers" directory with 89 subdirectories inside including names like "bluetooth", "telephony" and "usb". Looking inside them makes me believe that most are standard linux sources so maybe there is too much dross to uncover the Huawei specific diamonds! Hope not!

Here's the url for the download (< 103meg)

+1 Wicked phone that needs a support community, this phone packs a mighty punch for NZ$399 and it would be a shame for it to be overlooked

Hah! It seems that owners of the Google Nexus One have the same problem .. the Snapdragon chip seems to have FM radion AND FM transmitter built in but there needs to be an app to enable it! Yet another reason to get a CM kernel for the Ideos X5.

Most reviews of the Ideos X5 / U8800 seem to say that it has an FM radio but there is no application in mine to switch it on or tune it in. Does anyone here have FM radio in their Ideos X5?

An UPDATE for the U8800 / Ideos X5 seems to be available from Huaweidevice dot com! (In the downloads area file list, top of the list at the moment)

I've successfully downloaded the file (its size is about 153 meg) and extracted the instructions document. From that, below is a list of device build numbers that can be updated.

It seems to me that if this update process goes well, we'll be able to keep the file(s) and repeat the update process when we want to change back to the stock firmware if something goes wrong with a CM upgrade or while testing CM rom beta versions.

VERY briefly, the update process is to create a "dload" directory on a {blank?} micro SD card, copy files "UPDATE.APP” and "UPDATE_CUST.APP" into it, put the micro SD card into the U8800 and hold the vulume up/down key while pressing the power on\off button to get it to action the "dload" directory files as it powers up.

Here's the list of upgradeable build numbers (mine is on the list, YAY!) :)

Pity there's nothing in the zip file outlining what the update actually changes, we have been promised an update with wifi hotspot functionality so am assuming this is it but don't want to flash the update without knowing what it does, has anyone tried?

There's a u8800 / Ideos X5 thread running in XDA Developers with quite a bit of discussion on the update. At first people thought it was to give wifi tethering but now it looks like there is no wifi tethering, only the same usb tethering which works well and is bringing this reply.

I've not tried it yet as I plan to wait until after I've used the "violet screen boot" and Linux dd command to make images of the partitions (there are several!) of the internal nand storage media. This will allow me (I believe) to restore entire partitions or individual files over usb from a linux box or netbook pc., Then, after the update, I'll make partition images of that version also! :)

I too own this phone and would love for someone with the know how to support it. It is really a great phone at a stunningly low price, but it is somewhat let down by buggy software. A CM port for this phone then would be perfect.

This machine is a very cost-effective mobile phone, and with the mobile phone market, with the crowd in the doubles. Hope you can pay more attention and research ROM.

Donated with a note hinting toward Ideos X5 port :)

For all of those that would love a port but don't have the technical skills, I recommend doing what I did and following mejobloggs example :)

Done :)

So I've read the boot.img and recovery.img are in the root so I'm going to run a search for them to try and find them.

Also over on XDA I threw up This Post about making a forum for it until XDA have a dedicated one (which I would be happy to get CM people over too until the CM forums have their own section).

Just getting interest and will be happy to throw a board with a single forum together for this purpose until the sites get their sections :)

Let me know if you would like it
