I get a similar symptom on my S2 with CM9.1 .
It doesn't happen very often, and I suspect it's related to using battery intensive applications.
I've noticed it a few times after copying external USB drives using OTG cable. When the copy was done (10 minutes later and 15% lower on battery) I had no signal, and trying to go to airplane mode and back left the device stuck on airplane mode, although I could still use wifi and Bluetooth (but the airplane symbol would stay in the status bar and no cellular signal indicated).
I've switched to LPS modem and that seems to help, as I get less of the problem now (and I copy USB drives to my phone every day).
