It should be ok to update your recovery through Rom manager. If it gets broken, you can allways try to flash it again. Or install 4ext-recovery, which many claim to be more reliable. On the other hand, your old version of Clockworkmod recovery is probably fine also.

I've been using this since the day it was released. This probably has the same gps bug, that makes your phone reboot if you use navigation, and turn the screen off, which I believe affects all cm7.2 versions. I haven't tried that yet. Everything else seems to be working perfectly. I think there's not that many noticeable changes from the stable version, except for increasing ring volume option.

I think I had a boot loop on first install of 7.2 RC2. After that I've flashed all the release candidates and nightlys when they were released, and all of them worked fine.
