it started working now - don't know why, though of course i was doing a bunch of re-installs, whatnot.

but tapemachine audio recording app is still unusable due to the low mic gain, so i would like to get to the heart of this...!

ok - it's a monologue here - is nobody else really in need of VPN? anyway - an update:

- reflashed the latest nightly build to see if (pptp & L2pt) VPN would work on that. it doesn't.
- openVPN works, once painstakingly installed, but there's no nice widgets to get it going with a single click.
- droidVPN may provide occasional help, but its connection speed (at least in the free version) leaves a lot to be desired.

now, i'm wondering if anyone savvier than me could tell me if it's possible to port just the VPN component(s) from a ROM where it works to CM7.2?

yes, i think my phone is st18a, has 7.2 on it now. it reports st18i on the "about phone" version. to my understanding the only difference is that 3g is on AT&T u.s. frequency on the a.

pretty much everything works, except VPN - big problem for me.

i had exactly the same on cm 7.2 stable. an app called "display brightness pro" provides a workaround and is actually kinda cool - quick adjustment of screen brightness from the status bar.
