I was wondering if it's possible to change the soft key function of the search button to say the multitask button because I never use the search button and I do use the multitask button quite frequently, so it would be a lot faster to press the search button instead of holding down the home button.

Thanks for the app but in the app, there's no choice for the multitask button. There's a whole bunch of media options and even D-pad options but no multitask option.

Ok, so I been researching a little bit about the virtual keys and I have a solution for you. I had to figure it out on my own and I am starting to dabble in the finer points of Android...
If you have root, open your file manager of choice.
You need to navigate to /system/usr/keylayout/
You should see a file called melfas_touchkey
Open in it a text editor.
It should have a line that reads
Key 217 SEARCH VIRTUAL
Replace the word SEARCH with the word APP_SWITCH
Save the file.
Reboot.
Worked on my AT&T Skyrocket just fine. Is phone specific to making that work so it won't work on other phones... But it does for the AT&T version of the Skyrocket. If the filename does not exist. You will have to search out that file and make the change.
Good luck!

How did you save the file? Everytime I try to save the file, it says could not save the file.

What app are you opening it with? It needs to have root permissions!

I tried the default text editor and also jota text editor (both via astro file manager) but no prompt ever comes up asking for root access. I'm also not sure how to give an app root access when no prompt comes up.
EDIT: I used Root Browser Lite and the file saved and it works.
Thanks a lot for your help.

I was going to suggest Root Browser...
Did you switch your buttons?
You can assign those keys anything that is mapable. Thinking of trying to change the search key to a camera key....
