Where's the "play this noise when" I recieve a gmail option?
I've looked in profiles; doesn't work.
I've looked in sounds; doesn't work.
I've changed settings in the gmail app; doesn't work.
I had this working once, but the nightly turned it off.

It should be in settings>sound>notification ringtone, and then that should set your default ringtone for all your emails, and notifications, all that jazz. Or is that what you said you'd tried? I'm on the 7.2 stable version, and it shouldn't be too much different than the new nightly.

huh...that's really weird.. are you using the regular old gmail app, or like a third party email app? Maybe you could try getting a different app for your email, and see if that will let you change the notification tone. I use 'enhanced email'. It lets you have a ton of different emails all in one app. Also, you could just try going to either the nightly before the one you're on, see if it still doesn't work, or hop to the next nightly once its out. It's possible that its just an error in the nightly, and it might be fixed in the coming releases. I'm not sure what else could be wrong with it. And, it seems like a really dumb question, and I don't mean it to come off as though you're dumb, but you do have notification volume up, right? I know, dumb question, I'm sure you do, but, I gotta ask.

yes. the volume was turned up. yup. stock gmail app and stock email app. color me confused, but i switched from a 16gb sd card to a 32gb sd card today and somewhere during reloading the new card with data the phone decided it should make the assigned noise when it recieved an email. I don't understand it. but it's working again. thanks for the suggestions. no. really. the volume was all the way up. really.

Haha, I know, its just one of those things you have to ask. 
That is really weird. Was the tone one that you had saved on the SD card? Maybe there was like an error on the card or something. I'm not sure. But hey, at least you've got it working now, right?
