Hi everyone,
I am quite a newb here. I have locked T-mobile G2 phone that I would like to upgrade with CM ROM. I read the wiki page [1] and the process seems quite straight forward, but I would like to ask some questions before I start.
1. Do I need to unlock the phone before I start or just flash CM?
2. Wiki page describes how to backup my user data, but do I need to backup any system files before I install CM? I mean is there any proprietary blobs that are needed at later time.
3. Is it possible to restore the phone to original firmware after installing CM? Should I take any steps before flashing to make this possible.
4. And my final question is what version of CM is recommended for this phone. Currently I am running CM7.2 on B&B Nook Color and I like it. This phone has quite weak CPU so I don't know if CM9 would run at all. Should I bother with CM9 or just stick with CM7.2?
Thanks
SAL-e

1. which lock are you talking about? SIM LOCK? or bootloader? (you just need to unlock bootloader)
2. No
3. Yes, and nothing needs to be done
4. It's pretty good ROM, most of other custom ROMs are based on CM ROM. once you root it, you can try other ROMs.
btw, there is a nice PDF instruction @xda forum

Thanks dhlee528 for your help. I was thinking about the lock set by T-mobile. Currently this handset will not accept any other SIM but T-mobile's. I know I can unlocked because the pin is based on the EMI number, but if it is entered incorrectly 3 times in the row the phone will lock and I might to do more serious interventions.
In regards of the bootloader, I didn't think about this. How I can check if my bootloader is locked? The phone is stock state right now.

if it's stock, then it's locked

Under special note, it will give you link to a PDF file.
you can follow that or just link to get it unlock and root
then you just install clockwork then flash to CM
