I tried restoring to the CM7.1 backup but the md5 check failed. Finally restored to stock HTC Sense. But of course, I want CM9.

Also, CM 9 and CM 7 require different firmware levels to run. After flashing a 4.x.x compatible firmware then flashing CM 9, you won't be able to restore to a CM 7 Clockwork backup without reverting to an older firmware first.
Can either of you provide more detailed information on what firmware you have?
For example, when I reboot my phone into the bootloader, it shows:
it has S-OFF
HBOOT 1.27.0000
RADIO 11.22.3504.07_M
I'm using one of the CM 9 nightlies, and obtained the firmware from XDA's thread ?t=1412618
for radios, you can check the support downloads link on the wiki.

That's the problem. You're going to have to update the HBOOT version and possibly the RADIO in order to run ICS roms.
You can try one of the newer ones on the support wiki: hxxp://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Sensation:_Support_Downloads
I can't remember what is the minimum level you're going to need, maybe someone else can help, or you can check the XDA forums.

Apparently it is. Super CID might be optional, but the firmware update + factory reset/wipe is absolutely necessary for CM9.

Agreed, Super CID would be optional (as in, I was able to perform a firmware update + factory reset/wipe, without Super CID).

My bad! I hadn't put the cover back on. Guess the cover forms the GSM antenna or part thereof.

I had the same exact problem.
The reason it didnt work is because your are still using the Gingerbread firmware.
You need to go here:
http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=1459767
Get the 3.32 version. Make sure that if you use T-Mobile, you get the TMO version.
You cant use 3.33 until you have 3.32 first.
Put the firmware file on the root of your sdcard and go into recovery.
If you are using CMS it should see it and offer to update.
Do that and then remove it from the sdcard when it is finished and you are shut back down.
Now that you have the proper firmware, you can go through the CM install steps and re wipe and re install.
Hopefully that works for you.

I recall mentioning before that the HBOOT an RADIO needing to be updating, and you are right, the reason is because they had the Gingerbread firmware.

Thanks for the link. I couldn't remember where I got 3.32 from at the time, or what the minimum version for ICS was.
