Greetings. I recently installed 7.2 RC1 on my S2 and everything seems to be working except for automatic brightness. When I have it enabled, the screen brightness stays around what looks like about 33% (a little brighter than when the screen 'dims' after a few seconds).

Even if I shine a bright flashlight at the phone or walk outside on a very sunny day it still stays at the low brightness.

I don't think I've actually seen it change in response to light. It does dim after being idle for a few seconds though.

If I disable automatic brightness, I can adjust the brightness to all levels.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

In settings / cm settings / display / automatic back light / enable use custom
Then go into edit other levels

For the column that says screen, put these levels (should be 6 there by default, if not make it 6 by setting levels at the bottom)
From top to bottom

140
200
255

For lower, only 5 will be editable (first one is uneditable starting at 0)
Use these for other 5
40
80
160
280
400

These settings make the screen brighter than normally intended, you can (and I highly recommend you do) tweak them to suit your viewing habits.

Also in the automatic brightness screen use these other settings too

Light sensor filter / enabled: yes
Window length 2s
Reset threshold 400 lux
Sample interval 1s
Then toggle auto brightness off and on again (settings / display / brightness)

Awesome! Thank you! Using the values you've provided makes it much, much better. Now that I know where to look I can perfect them for my viewing preferences.
