I have been noticing that the speaker on my phone goes out from time to time. Let me clarify what I am talking about. The speaker that is having the problem is the one used for speaker phone, play notifications, ringtones . . . it's the speaker on the back. The speaker that you use to make/listen to phone calls works fine as well as the headphones work fine.
Also, if you listen really closely, this speaker on the back, doesn't go out completely. What I mean is that it turns itself way down to where you won't hear it until you put it right up against your ear (which defeats the purpose of speaker phone).
The Problem: Well, it's pretty obvious what the problem is.
The Cause: No clue. It happens at completely random times. Can't really associate a certain setting or application with it yet.
The Fix: A battery pull seems to temporarily fix the issue for a random amount of time. Sometimes it works fine for a day and other times it will only take 5 minutes until it happens again.
Any & all suggestions are welcome. If I find a fix for this I will be sure to post it because I can't be the only one having this kind of issue.

Many users over at xda seem to be reporting that their speakers are faulty. I think the solution was to apply pressure on the speaker from the outside, in order to fix loose connections

Well, the only issue I have for that fix is that this never happened before until I installed CM7. I have had my Captivate for quite awhile now and I just recently installed CM7. Could it be a coincidence? Maybe but unlikely in my opinion. Either way I am open to all input so I will give this a try next time it happens. Thanks!

No, it's not a coincidence. It's definitely a CM7 thing. This is my second captivate, and it happens to me every time I put CM7 on. When it doesn't go out completely and just gets very quiet, I think it's because it's playing through the phone speaker on the front of the phone instead of the ringer speaker on the back of the phone. I noticed playing with the volume, ringer choice, music player, and headphone jack all mess with it, changing it from playing everything in headphone mode to loud speaker mode to telephone call mode. I think you'll find that when it goes partially out, you can hear everything through the telephone speaker, and when it goes completely out you can hear everything through the headphone jack.

I just finished dicking around with mine to get it into the quiet mode, and I was wrong, my bad. It is actually coming out of the speaker on the back if the phone, just very quietly.

No, not about the CM thing. He was saying he was wrong about the following statement:
" I think you'll find that when it goes partially out, you can hear everything through the telephone speaker, and when it goes completely out you can hear everything through the headphone jack.
Like I said a battery pull is a temporary fix but I am looking for a more permanent one. I will keep searching and trying new things and will post my results. Thanks for the reply Johnn.

Man, this is a huge headache.
This is too much hassle. At least with jailbreaking an iPhone, it's quite simple and doesn't have so many glitches or issues as with installing custom roms.
I'm really bummed out. Oh well.

It is not the Mod. It is the hardware. 3 co-workers and I got Samsung Captivates last year around May. I rooted my phone and flashed CM7 3 months after I got it. One of my co-worker had a problem with his captivate while on stock 2.2. He had his phone replaced twice until he finally upgraded to a galaxy s II because of the problem with the speaker cutting out. He had to tap the phone hard on his hand to get sound back. I went back to stock 2.2 and upgraded to 2.3 recently. I am starting to have this issue with the speaker now.
Not once did I have trouble while on CM7. And everything was good on stock untill the last few weeks.

So your saying it is coincidence that the first day I rooted and installed CM7 is also the first day I have had any problems with my speaker on my phone? FYI, this phone is not considered a "new" phone in that I have had it about 1 month since it's availability with AT&T in the U.S.
I'm not ignoring the fact that it could just be a hardware issue that just so happened to start acting up the day I installed CM7 but just seems kinda odd to me.

In my case, it was a hardware issue because pushing on the rear speaker would get it to work again. I also thought it was stuck in headphone mode, but it wasn't.
