I haven't really been keeping up over the past couple of months since it was announced CM9 was a few months out at the very least, but I do recall seeing something a while back to the tune of "We're not sure we'll be able to make CM9 work on the Evo 4g."  Something about closed-source drivers if memory serves.

Has anyone seen any updated comments from the CM team regarding our phone in the last few weeks?

EVO is just a low priority because of how old it is.  After all, it IS the first 4G phone in the US.  It's my understanding that CM9 will come to every CM7 device possible.  As I mentioned in one of the many other threads about this, a developer of another ROM has demonstrated that it IS possible by doing it.  CM9's development will likely accelerate exponentially now that they have new top-quality machines, and by the time they get to us, their work will be mostly done for them.  When Deck and Preludedrew finish their EVO drivers, we'll probably get some very nice unofficial ports while we wait for the real thing.

And now I'm glad I got the Epic instead of the Evo.

They're less than 3 months apart, so I doubt CM9 for EVO will come painstakingly slower than Epic.  The slightly longer wait period is worth it to run on EVO's superior hardware.

Notince that the EVO has double the internal storage, an FM tuner, larger screen, and vastly better cameras.  Epic has a keyboard.
Why are you lurking in the EVO forums if you never had one, anyway?

I would not say that Deck or Preludedrew's work is not the real thing

Deck and evervolv are definitely not CM9.  I know because I'm testing them.  Deck compiled a buggy cm9 with his drivers but never went beyond playing with it afaik.  Preludedrew has requested that a branch be opened for supersonic but last i heard wasn't submitting code nor even basing his rom on it.

There is newer information to consider.  I've been told that the CM9 developers who were planning to do the official Supersonic port are now too busy with personal matters.  On the other end, there have since been several other developers considering taking over.  As of March 13 there is an  official ICS driver for Adreno 2xx series GPUs, which eases the learning curve enough to allow more developers with less experience to work on it.  It's now a matter of dropping drivers in and compiling.  I've never succeeded in cooking ROMs from such base components but I've also never had all of the components so readily available, so I'm going to try.  If I come up with something that works, I will share it.

Here's my question, and forgive my ignorance on the matter. I've used CM7 (many versions/nightlies) the stock rom for HTC and Mik Roms.
With that said, what will be the true benefit of Ice Cream Sandwich on our EVOs, assuming it's CM9 that has it or another ROM?
What can we expect to be different or better than what we currently have? Are there key features currently not available that will be?
Or is performance supposed to be vastly better?

I've not seen a bullet sheet revealing any features.

Thanks.

Performance.  It's incredibly fast and smooth.

UI improvements.  There are new options andsome rearrangd elements tobe more intutive.

security!  ICS adds optional encryption to make your /data partition inaccessible to theives.

App compatibility.  The API is improved with every major release to allow apps to easily do more.  Getting thelastest apps will require an upgrade.

Ok, thank you!

Very good explanation, and look forward to it.
Also, i assume the Bluetooth hid would be part of the stack?

June 20th, 2012...
I wonder if, in the last 8 months, I could have learned from scratch how to write the missing proprietary drivers?

What would it take to get started? Android SDK on a Linux machine, then...

I guess I answered my own question right there...
Anyway, I just wanted to relate this, as it's relevant to the posted topic. It seems the list for CM9's first RC has been published. Final or not, our beloved Supersonic is not on that list.
(So, this is what being outmoded feels like.)
Oh well. To everything, there is a season...
Regardless, I'm proud of the CM team for working so hard to get so many units on that list. Way to go!
On the plus side, this Evo problem has got me, (and a few others, I'm sure) dabbling in Android development. I find that the inability to find an easy answer has got me needing to offer an answer of my own, and the more I learn, the more interesting it all becomes.
Maybe you'll see me around the rookie forums, at xda, among others.
Any good advice? Shoot me a message!

First off, awesome job to the Cyanogenmod team. I've had my Evo for a long time, and just now got fed up and rooted and flashed it yesterday. Love what CM7 has to offer. So much that I came looking for the latest. Now I feel like I was late to an awesome party!

If anyone out there is still working on getting CM9 to work on an Evo 4g, there is still a need for it. :)

Cheers and keep up the great work!

There is an unofficial port of CM9 out there for the EVO 4g.

The forum won't let me post a link but you can find it on
h t t p : / / f o r u m . x d a - d e v e l o p e r s . c o m / s h o w t h r e a d . p h p ? t = 1 6 5 5 6 9 5
(if an admin could convert this back to a link that would be great.)

The latest version was pushed a couple of days ago and it's quite stable. I've been running it on my personal device. There have only been a couple of glitches that I have encountered:
  • Netflix doesn't work (from my understanding it doesn't work on any CM9 build)
  • Hulu doesn't work out of the box (just install the hacked version and it will work for you)
  • When closing an app and going back to the home screen there is occasionally an odd scaling issue where the homepage pop animation animates to the wrong size then snaps to the correct size.
  • 4G (WIMAX) doesn't work

I've been using the CM9 Unofficial nightlies for a few months now. They've been running absolutely great, I highly recommend them if you can live with the small issues that are still left.

Did they get the FFC working? That was the dealbreaker for me.

The ROM that he is referring to still does not have the front-facing camera working, and you have to use a separate app to record video. Aside from that the rom works great, I never use the FM radio so I don't miss it. I am having a slight issue with the charge on my battery not lasting as long as it did with CM7 though, then again it's probably not completely optimized yet either. I will however continue to use this ROM until CM9 is officially released for the Evo, and with the announcement of CM10 and Jelly bean i'm afraid that the Evo is about to be left behind.
