Disappointed with Cyanogen

I'll list the problems
1. Can't hear caller , phone rings, I pick up, can't hear the other person. It's now happening regularly and it never happened with the Samsung rom.
This is a deal breaker
2. The icons and their labels are quite a bit smaller than the Samsung interface. No, go launcher is not the solution. Why make it so much smaller without providing customization? Fine the devs are kids with great eyesight, but wait when you get older, it'll catchup with you too, there is no avoiding it. You can't stop time.
This is now also a deal breaker for me.
3. No speed dial assigned to number on dial pad. WTF, why would there be no speed dial? I'll give them credit for having a kind-of two-tap-dial-button re-dial (don't know whether the Samsung rom had that feature, never found out).
Although it's not a deal breaker, it's a huge strike against the mod. And no, I don't want another dialer that has it.
On the topic of re-dial not not present on Android phones. Can someone explain to me the logic behind the thinking of not including a dedicated re-dial button. I think it's idiotic not having a re-dial button on a phone. You call a busy number and you need to re-dial, it's a no brainer.
4. Missing notepad (memo) and loss of old notes from Samsung rom.
This is a huge oversight. And no, I don't want to go and download an app for that. It's such a basic feature to have a notepad on a smart phone that not including it in any rom makes no sense.
Not a deal breaker but not happy about losing my previous notes.
5. My service message says I'm on Rogers network when in fact I'm a Fido subscriber. I can make calls so I'm obviously connected to the right network but still ... There is only a handful cell service providers in North America, so why not get it right?
And when I tried ALL the radios from the extra downloads, I had no service at all, on ALL of them?
So what are those radios for? Why none of them work?
And now I get "data roaming" icon and notice even though I am in my subscribers area and am not roaming.
Not a deal breaker but it's annoying.
No I don't want to be applying any hacks to fix that. It's reasonable to expect basic phone features to work on a phone.
As I've not been able to find good solutions to these problems and the development for Samsung Captivate looks dead, I'll be flashing back to Samsung Rodgers rom and root my phone, remove some of the Samsung and Rodgers apps and have a great working phone again like I had before flashing to Cyanogen 7.1
I don't mean to offend any Cyanong devs by this post, I'm sure many users of many other phones are happy and so it's obvious they've done a lot of great work that's appreciated by many.
I myself have flashed Cyanogen 5 on my friend's HTC Magic couple years ago (or at least it feels that long) and the phone is still working great and is being used every day.
I'm just sad that the rom for my Samsung Captivate didn't live up to my expectations and I can't live with it in its current state.
If anyone knows of other roms that don't have the above shortcomings then I'd love to hear about it before I flash back to Samsung rom.

I think you should give it another chance. Heck, run a benchmark test again a stock Galaxy S 2 and watch your friend fall over because your phone is faster!
What ever you do don't try Darky's ROM. If you don't like CM7.1, you won't like Darky's. Don't think it's totally optimized for the Captivate. If I ever get bored I may try Miui. Seems like the next best thing. The development for the Captivate may be dwindling, but CM7.1 will make it the most future proof.
Flat.

And the part where you're missing a specific app, you're just wrong. If you're so lazy you can't install the apps you want by yourself, noone can take you seriously. I mean it, that's so silly I can't even bear myself to read the rest of your post. The answer is: no, the CM team will not and should not provide specific apps whenever a users whishes to have something. If you aren't willing to spend the 30 seconds needed to install a notepad app and use that as a reason not to use this ROM, then go ahead. Use something else. Just don't look here for an answer to what to use, because we will tend to say "CyanogenMod, no doubt".

I shouldn't be feeding the trolls but I'll bite anyway.
What standard software are you talking about? Is the radio module standard? Or the dialer? Why not remove the dialer and have people download one from the app market? Let's see what the response from users would be then.
I think I made it clear that I consider a notepad a standard app (feature) just like a dialer on a phone.
I have not seen a phone in last 5+ years (even "dumb" phones) that didn't include a notepad. So yeah, that's why I consider it a standard app that should be included standard just like a dialer on a smart phone.
What "WAY more issues with the stock Rogers 2.3.3" are you talking about? Be specific and name at least one issue otherwise you're just trolling.
Why would I run a benchmark? I never said I had performance issues (with either stock or CM 7.1) at all.
I outlined 5 specific issues, none mentioned performance.
If you don't have anything constructive to comment then don't reply to my post please.

No, not hearing the caller is not normal. And if you did a bit of research before opening your mouth you'd know that it's an issue that others have with CM 7.x rom. Not everyone has it but some do.
The rest of your reply is just insulting trolling that I will not waste my time rebuting.
Same as with Flat, if you don't have anything constructive to reply then it's best to not reply at all otherwise you're just trolling.

Roger 2.3.3. Where do I start. Black screen of death every day. Lag, lots of lag. On Rogers 2.2, I couldn't even transfer more then a gig of files to the internal memory without getting the "too large for destination file system". Loaded with apps (this is what I meant by standard software) I never used and could not delete easily. Poor battery performance, throttled CPU speed, ugly interface. Lag and oh ya, lag.
I assume you tried a full wipe and re-install?
For a 'notepad' type of app, I use Evernote. It's very sweet. Can access all your notes from any PC, or phone. Nothing is stored on the phone, so your won't loose anything.
Smaller Icons? I compared with my wife's phone and they're just about the same. Maybe a touch smaller. My friend has glaucoma and he sees them just fine ( <---- this is trolling btw)

I'm starting to feel like 1. is more of a feature than a bug. Sometimes it's nice to not hear some of the people who call me.
I kid, I do find it annoying. But on the other hand I tried to go back to a stock rom over the situation and the experience was so terrible and slow that I decided I'd rather just use Cyanogen and deal with it.

isn't normal. Flash back to stock and go through the instructions carefully.
I've installed Cyanogen twice from scratch per instructions and still have this problem regularly. I have yet to find a fix. I'd also read a few places saying it's a common CM problem with the Captivate.

Yes, it was very annoying to pick up the phone and not hearing anything.
And it was happening quite often.
I've since flashed back to Rogers 2.3 rom, rooted, and unistalled most of the Samsung and Rogers apps and I'm satisfied with the phone now.
It's fast with almost two days battery life. I have speed-dial again, and also have ThinkFree Office and proper media playback.
CM didn't play some of the media I had. The touchwiz is actually not bad, and is definitelly not as buggy as the Go Launcher which was just terribly buggy.
CM has a lot of good features and is probably great on other phones, and even on the Captivate it's good depending which features are important to an individual.

And I miss speed-dial as well.

That's not how they market it, though. The ROM calls itself more reliable than stock Android-based ROMs, yet has basic issues with calls and even just booting up (see next line)
Quote
Oh, is that so? The only reason I'm here right now is because I'm having this problem with... you guessed it, 7.1.
Quote
Please, point me in the direction of such development. After seeing posts reporting major issues with this ROM (like the boot issue I am currently experiencing, or this issue) go completely unanswered... if this forum is supposed to be the Captivate CM developer's forum, then it sure doesn't sound like any significant development on the Captivate CM rom is going on at all.
Quote
Quote
You can say this all day, but if my phone can't even boot up it doesn't matter how many or what specific features the ROM has.
Quote
"You mean the ROM that gets stuck at the boot screen? Tried it already."
If anyone has suggestions as to the boot issue please post them to one of the above threads as I'm monitoring them... Otherwise, if anyone has any recommendations besides Fasty (was next on my list to try, but it doesn't look like his website is up - also doesn't sound like he'll be maintaining his ROM) then please lemme know.

Well, I've gone back to Samsung Rogers rom, rooted, uninstalled all the Samsung and Rogers apps, other than the ones I wanted to keep like the notepad and Office Suite and my phone works great, over two days battery life and no calls where I can't hear the caller.
I'm not missing any CM features.
And if development was so alive and well then they would've fixed the basic bugs.
I haven't seen any progress since last year so ....
