During this weekend i had a similar problem during a trip to a city at 140km far from my place here in Brasil.
My phone carrier is VIVO and its baseband was setted to this company (850/2100mhz). After almost throwing my phone through a window i decided to change basebands and it started to work fine after i set it to Claro Argentina (900/2100mhz)!

I get the same problem on my phone (UK T-Mobile).  The phone looks like it has a signal but trying to use the internet or make a call shows that it doesn't really have one.  Only solution is to re-boot.

But - I think this is more of a fundamental problem with the phone.  With both stock ROM's I've had problems.  When it used to boot up, it'd lose the signal and then re-boot.  It would re-boot about 4 times.  CM does not get in the re-boot loop but it looses the signal about 3-4 times on a re-boot before it settles down.

Sometimes with the old ROM's I would get a random re-boot.  I now think that it was doing that when it lost the signal.

In other words - maybe the stock ROM re-boots itself in this lost signal situation but CM tries to carry on.  In a way, the stock ROM's worse sounding re-boot issue actually gets it out of the lost signal problem.  With CM you have to notice and then do a re-boot yourself.

Just a theory!

I think you should try another baseband.
Just for update my case, now i´m using international RT 2.5X as my default baseband and it´s all working!

Go into your applications folder and run "Defy baseband selector".  I tried the suggestion to use international 2.5x but that didn't help with my problem.  I got to work and has 4 signal bars showing but the battery was draining fast and was not able to make calls - usual problem.

Got it working!

My phone has been up for 4 weeks now without a re-start!  It's never been like this before.  For me, on T-Mobile in the UK, the fix appears to be because I set the baseband to "Central Europe Hong Kong, Taiwan, Arabia, France, Nordic 3.4.x United Kingdom 4.5.1-85"

Or it could be because T-Mobile have been messing with their network and only recently finished combining it with Orange's network.  Still - I'm not going to change anything now to find out!
