I'm having the exact same issue. Once in the bad state, I've tried toggling Data and 2G/3G without luck; only reboot works.

3 of us.
This cm is a pain in the ass. If it wasn't so difficult to go back to stock I would.
I couldn't find a trouble ticket on the issue. I don't know how to pull logs so I didn't send one.
I wish I could delete airplane mode altogether. This phone only decides to act up when I need it most.

I live in NYC where I am constantly going below and above ground, so sometimes it makes sense to use airplane to conserve battery. Well anyways, when I use it and then try to turn it off, sometimes i'll get a dialogue saying Android.phone or whatever force closed or whatever. And this will continue looping until eventually the radio does go back up. Sometimes, there will be the indication that all is well, but I won't be able to use data or it will still say I have no connection, cannot send message or browse the internet, etc.

I getting this same issue, I rooted and flashed CM7.1.0.1 I'm wondering what version everyone else is on, there are 2 "Oct. 9th 2011" & "Oct. 10th 2011"?
I flashed the 10th thinking it was the most up to date, can someone confirm they've gotten this issue with the 9th?
Not sure why this is happening, but this is very similar behavior to when i enable "WiFi calling" it totally kills my network (tmobile) data connection and reboot is all that fixes it. Hence i don't use WiFi calling on either the G2x or my G2, I have unlimited minutes but It would be a great feature when I'm connected to WiFi and the cell towers is not as strong as I'd like (such is the case when I'm in the office)
Anyway i hope it's resolved, i have a feeling that everyone's wired in on the ICS build of CM, and expect it to be fixed on that version... at least it's something I can avoid at this point. Still I'd like to remedy it if at all possible.
Thx in advance to anyone who may be able to assist, and all the hard work to that goes into CM!

I've seen a similar case, but not seemingly tied to airplane mode. That is, occasionally I find the data not working, despite a 'G', 'E', or 'H' on the top bar with good solid bars. And sometimes, a hot reboot (reboot via menu option) doesn't get data going for me.
It appears my phone occasionally forgets it's APN data settings, resulting in it not knowing how to connect to T-Mobile data.
The fix? I'm no magician, and I don't know the permanent fix. I installed an application called 'APNs Backup', which requires root. When I (coincidentally) got the data working right, I made a backup copy of the APN. Whenever it fails now, I restore from my backup - and yes, it does a mandatory reboot. Doesn't sound any better than you guys who already do a reboot to restore data. But that wasn't giving me back my data access every time, this does.
