Hi, all.

At some point shortly, I'll hopefully be rooting my partner's Desire S and installing CM. I've still got my rooted G1 and love it, even though it is showing it's age.

I notice that in order to gain S-OFF, the wiki suggests using  the Revolutionary method. I think it's really great that the Revolutionary guys have found a way to gain S-OFF, but I am also a big fan of open-source software and believe that releasing code 'early and often' helps everyone. Being a former GNU/Linux sys admin and now specialising in security and risk, I don't have any coding skills. Does anyone know whether any work is under way to gain S-OFF using an open source method? It would appear from the Revolutionary website that the team don't have any plans to release the code at the moment.

Cheers,

Chris.

I don't believe any other method from the Revolutionary method works as safely/well/smoothly/open source. However I could be mistaken. But if you look here http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=1146601 it would seem revolutionary is your best bet despite the obvious downfalls (it would be great for them to release the code yes, but I can respect why they wouldn't at this time at least)

Also your partners Desire S may update to Sense 3.0 version presently or may have already done so, be wary of this as it might update the hboot version to something that hasn't been S-OFFed yet and rooted. However if Sense 3.0 would be a sufficient update enough for your partner then go ahead and enjoy of the more 3D interface and improved visuals :)

It's all quite crazy right now in the Android world, but a fantastically great crazy world it is :-P

Thanks, JonJJon.

I take your point, but another concern is that when software is closed source, we can't actually see whether anything bad is being done. I'm not suggesting this is the case here, but it would be easy to insert malware and without the peer review of open-source, we could potentially have many infected handsets.

Thanks, again.

Chris.

Completely understand where you are coming from and agree, hope that it does become opensource and all that jazz in the future :)
