When I first flashed CM7, my phone flew like never before, especially compared to when I was on stock ROMs. I could reasonably compare it to and put it head to head with my dad's stock Galaxy SII, and it performed all normal operations nearly as quickly (this excludes games and process-heavy activities). I felt like I had a brand new phone in my hands.

Its been a little while since then, and I've slowly imported my old data, re-installed old apps, installed new apps, made new shortcuts and widgets, and now my phone is beginning to feel a bit sluggish again, sometimes experiencing lag in animations, taking longer loading things, taking a long time to reboot, etc.

I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to speed up the phone, improve its overall performance, and just keep it running with that same quick, smooth, snappy feel it first had after installing CM7.

Importing system data might have done it. Also could be where you installed the apps put any you don't need Widgets or instant access to on your SD card

Start by wiping your Cache and Davlik-Cache. Check which apps are always on, determine if you REALLY need them, and remove the ones that you don't. I would be careful with Task Managers as well.

Adding app layers to your phone can take a toll in its functionality. Keep your phone lean by removing apps you don't use. I recommend backup apps. You can remove apps that you use sporadically and reinstall them as needed.

Keep in mind that if your experience is based on Cm 7.0 then that's android 2.3.3 and CM 7.1 is 2.3.7.  Lots of upgrades to Android and then to CM.  Normally any upgrades are targeted to newer hardware (not your evo!) and generally new functionality means it will run slower on older hardware.  Just look at how many dual core devices are out now compared to six months ago.

  • What does wiping your cache and dalvik-cache doe exactly? I've never understood those really...
  • How do you determine which apps are always on? I don't use a task manager as in a task killer, but I use Watchdog and System Panel to monitor running apps to see if any are getting out of control.
  • What do you mean by "app layers"? How do I prevent this?
@NakedDave - Why might have importing the system data done it?

@tmeisenh - 7.1 is the first and only version of CM I've tried. But was there really that much of a difference between 2.3.3 and 2.3.7?

System data from one rom to another can be problematic.  Just moving from 7.0.3 to 7.1 and importing data messed me up in fact.
