Hiya guys (and girls I think),

I bought a European Htc Hero (so GSM right ?), I'm pretty happy with it but I needed one thing : A proxy over 3G and lucky me, the APN proxy isn't working at all... -_-'
SO I guess custom androids are what I'm looking for right since HTC has discontinued support for htc hero. :D

So as a newbie I gotta some questions (So please be cool at me :'( )
I'm planning to install CyanogenMod on my hero, well the first question ever :
How do I do that ? Is there tutorials about that around ?

Some others questions :
Is there a risk that I can err... make my phone unable to boot ?
What components do I lose ? (I saw some custom rom where the camera wasn't working)
Is there all the google apps included ? (Market, Maps,...)
Is there a way I can get HTC Sense ? (I love that thing so much :'( )
Can I connect to my SSH Server and tunnel my android to it using Cyanogen mod ?

Thanks in advance for your answers, I hope to make my hero better :)

here is how to install http://wiki.cyanogen...-_HTC_Hero_(GSM)

in CM6.1 and CM7 all hardware works. There is no Flash 10.1 (the Hero's CPU is does not support it), or Flash Lite (HTC supplied this for the Hero, so you would need a HTC based ROM).

google apps (commonly called gapps) is a separate flash mentioned at the end of the above wiki.

htc Sense is not in any CM rom.  for Sense, go check out the XDA forums for a modified HTC rom.

If you want HTC Sense, I strongly recommend VillainROM (here), but to be honest, I have to wonder why you want it. I know it looks pretty, but it's SO SLOW! Seriously, ask yourself, is that level of annoying lag really necessary?. Just for my sake, and maybe for yours, try FroydVillain (here). It is fast, sexy and will make you love your phone again.

hope this helps
P.s, how nooby are you? (as in do you need more help/advice?)

Hiya all, thanks for your answers. I'm nebie in android but I'm kinda a lot in computer (I know C++, and learning some Sh/Bash at school).

Actually, I like HTC sense because it helps me a lot, I just flip my screen to the left and my SMS are here. Another left flip, I've got my mails, another left flip and my agenda is here ;)
At right, I do have music widget which is a fast shortcut to music playing, flip at right, you got my contact list with picture fairly easier than contact manager and the last right I have the "Today in History" for when I'm bored, I read some things out of wikipedia =)

That's why I like htc sense ^^

But I consider not using cyanogen then. I considered using Skype (because updating could make things better right ?) but it seems that HTC Hero is not really supported by Skype Team. (Yeah yeah I know Skype is devil but I can't use UDP over 3g so I've had to find something...)

If anybody has an alternative Skype client using port 80 or 443 in TCP, please xD

Thanks for all your answers though :)
