MOTOROLA QUENCH XT5 (502)
#1
Posted 30 December 2010 - 08:56 PM
I have recently bought Motorola Quench XT5 (502).
It came with Android 2.1 (Eclair).
I chose Motorola XT5 over LG optimus P500 because of the hardware (5MP camera with LED flash, Gorilla display and the obvious looks).
The only drawback, which i think, with the Motorola XT5 is android 2.1, whereas LG Optimus comes with Android 2.2 and upgradable to 2.3.
The hardware features (processor, rom) are same for both. So, I thought the Motorola will release an upgrade to 2.2 for Quench series.
But recently they have posted in their website that XT5 will remain in 2.1 (https://supportforum...oftwareupgrades).
I was very much disappointed as I was hoping for an upgrade to 2.2. The problem with 2.1 is that the applications cannot be installed onto external memory(sd card), which was a major obstacle (for me).
I am basically a doctor and wanted to use my phone to read chm books and install medical apps, which are taking lots of storage and XT5 has only 172MB internal memory.
So, I searched internet, browsed thru' lot of websites & blogs, done a quite research about modding/rooting of phone, using custom roms to upgrade to froyo (2.2).
I noted down the information as a flow chart in my notebook and worked on it.
Finally,after spending lots of time and resources on this project, I just updated my XT5 to 2.2 and I would like to share my knowledge with the fellow XT5 owners, who are eager to upgrade to 2.2 (Froyo).
step by step process to froyo(which I noted and followed):
(First of all I would like to thank all those people in various blogs and websites, who contributed a lot for the development of ROMs and othe software, which made this possible.)
1)Root the phone with UniversalAndroot. (U can google it or click here http://www.filefacto...1.6.2-beta5.apk)
2) Install RomManager (clockwork mod) from android Market.
3)Open the Rom Manager and click on "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" --> Select "Commtiva Z71" phone (compatible with Boston and clones)
4)Then Backup your original ROM (scroll down to see the back up rom option). The ROM will be backed up on the SD card. Save a copy of it elsewhere safely in your PC.
I suggest to go thru this site http://www.androidpo...backup-restore/
5)Download the following files from the respective links (courtesy: http://boston-mania.blogspot.com)
ROM (2.2) --> update-cm-6.1.2-Z71-signed.zip (http://www.filefacto...-Z71-signed.zip)
Google Apps --> gapps-mdpi-20101220-signed.zip (http://www.filefacto...1220-signed.zip)
Camera Patch --> Patch_Cam_CM-6.1.2-Z71.zip (http://www.filefacto...M-6.1.2-Z71.zip)
copy these files to the root directory of the sd card (do not make any folders).
6)(FLASHING ROM) Open RomManager and click "Install ROM from SD card"
select "update-cm-6.1.2-Z71-signed.zip"
tick for Backup existing Rom and Wipe Data and Cache
click ok to reboot and install
The flashing process should take 5-10 minutes installing everything and then 10-20 minutes during the first boot. Please be patient during this process.
7)After the phone boots you will see new ROM (froyo). There will be no market app (no need to panic).
Now open RomManager and click "Install ROM from SD card"
select "gapps-mdpi-20101220-signed.zip"
tick only for "Wipe Data and Cache"
Ok to reboot and install
8)After phone rebbots the setup process starts (as if the phone was started for the first time).
Complete the setup process and after that you'll see the market app and other apps.
9)Now again open RomManager and click "Install ROM from SD card"
select "Patch_Cam_CM-6.1.2-Z71.zip"
tick only for "Wipe Data and Cache" (i think no need to tick it also, because if you tick it, after the phone reboots the setup process repeats once again)
Ok to reboot and install
10) Voila! Motorola XT502 with Froyo (2.2)
PS: I advice friends to go through the following sites before starting this process:

Thank you all...

Thanks neptune....i didn't notice much of battery consumption on my xt5 with this mod.
By the way, there was a problem today. The previous day i installed Gingerbread keyboard and didn't wipe Data and cache. It got installed and rebooted fine. Late night I was talking on the phone and it got switched off due to low battery...I kept it for charging and when I attemted to switch it on today morning, it didn't get turned on...the Motorola symbol appears and it is not going further.
I tried to enter recovery mode but nothing comes up...not able to do master reset.
The mistake i did(atleast, I think) was not wiping the data and cache when i installed Gingerbread keyboard through Rom Manager.
Today afternoon I took it to the mobile shop and told them it is not turning on (i didn't mention about the modding/rooting)....they said that there is some software problem (tools) with xt5 and are waiting for the update version...by monday they will let me know.
Till then can anyone help me in solving this issue to get back my phone to it's original rom (I backed up my rom but not able to enter recovery mode).
Thanks in advance...
PS: Always wipe Data and Cache when installing anything from Rom Manager ( I learnt thru' hard way)

This is the first method to upgrade to 2.2 that i have found on the net for quench xt5. I hope it works bcoz i desperately want 2.2 . I also thought in the beginning that motorola will release 2.2 forxt5 bt they won't and i need flash support in browsers which is not there in 2.1 . Trying it right now. Wish me luck

Many thanks for the excellent tutorial. I have succesfull installed Froyo on my Quench XT5 and have been using it for about a week. I am experiencing serious problems with battery. These are
1. The battery does not last even for a day even when the mobile is used for barely 3-4 calls and 8-10 messages. The apps that use most battery are 'Cell Standby' and 'Phone Idle'
2. The battery indicator seems faulty.
I tried googling around to get answers to these problems. However, guess this is the best forum for getting such answers. Please help.
Cheers!
